In Madagascar they use umbrellas nearly all the time to protect them from both the rain and the sun. This young girl I photographed in a town called Ampasimanolotra (pronounce that if you can! Lol), towards the east of the island. What I rather liked about this shot was how the red of her umbrella is reflected upon her face. You may notice how rotten her teeth are, this is very common in Madagascar, even in the children, and it's probably due to a combination of the abundant fruit they eat (it's very cheap there) and the fact that few can afford tooth brushes and toothpaste, but instead use the twigs from a particular tree that grows there (I can't remember the name of it) to clean their teeth. We really don't realise how pampered we all are - so perhaps something else to be remembered at this time of year. Slightly late I know, but happy Thanksgiving to you all across the Atlantic!
