A Painted Lady

The Painted Lady formerly known as the Cosmopolitan. I hope it didn't get the name 'Painted Lady' because of a sullied past. Besides being one of the most if not the most widely distributed butterfly in the world; it has impressive flying capabilities, being able to reach speeds of 20 MPH. All summer long I have been shooting with just 2 lenses, my 90mm Macro and my 70-300 Tele-Zoom. Recently I did a review of a post by Kathy Banich in which she stated she used the 24-105 lens. That prompted me to take mine out for an afternoon of fun in the sun. I had nearly forgotten just how good this piece of fast glass is. This lens is a constant f/4 @ 24-105mm. I chose this lens not because of the reported air speed of the subject but because there was intermittent wind. Russian Sage is a tall plant that likes to sway to the music of the wind, so a fast shutter release is called for. I tried manual focusing for a short while, but it became evident real fast that I wasn't. Ultimately, I refined my technique to holding the exposure button at half, in doing so the camera kept focus as I moved around. For your viewing pleasure I offer you my capture of a Painted Lady...
