Birds Photos Contest Entry
I was deadheading some spent blooms on one of my butterfly bushes when this young female pileated woodpecker decided to start working a dead tree on the edge of the woods behind our house. I was able to get surprisingly close, though it was a painfully slow process-lol-figuring at some point it would become alarmed and take off. We had a large silver maple uproot a few years ago, so i was able to conceal part of my body behind the upturned roots. I got several photos and at one point she stopped and stretched out her wing. Adjusted brightness, sharpness, edited out a minor distraction.
