Standoff between Swan and Goose

Feathered Foes

I was scouting one of my favorite places, crossing the dike there ,when I heard the sound of large wings slapping the water behind me. I turned around but trees blocked my vision. As I passed a small opening a Canadian Goose suddenly popped out of the water right beside me. A swan had been in hot pursuit but stayed by the edge of the water. The goose was very upset and started honking at the swan. The goose could have crossed the dike or walked down a little further to get back in the water but persistently tried to go back to the same place he came in. The swan was determined that, that was not going to happen! Every time the goose tried to get back in the water the swan would charge him. These two had a stand-off for about 12- 15 min. The goose honking all this time. I couldn't pass up a moment like this so of course I took some pictures. I have no idea what brought this on but the two were clearly not getting along. It ended with the goose finally managing to sneak in, but the swan was in hot pursuit right behind him. The chase was on as they flew off in the same direction they came from.

Timing is everything! I was clearly at the right spot at the right time, though I can't say the same thing for these two! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for stopping by! :o) Helvi
