Some may think fast food is a realatively modern concept. When we were in Pompeii, Italy the tour guide pointed out that the image you see was a Roman fast food place sometime before 79AD when Pompeii was buried by ash from Mt. Vesuvius. The round holes were filled with wood and burned. The resulting coals provided a slow, simmering heat. Clay bowls were then placed above the coals and were loaded with soups and stews. You could come by and they would fill your bowl with your choice. Not that different than what we do today. Although probably cash and carry, no VISA accepted! : ))
