AV, I didn't vote in this contest because I had an entry with the picture of a public ashtray titled "Butts". I went back to see who won and who got how many votes, etc. I remember seeing your photo during the contest and didn't see any notes other than the title of the picture. I didn't put it together. I just read your full artist's notes tonight and it did indeed cause a couple tears to roll down my cheeks. It is the ugly side of life, it is the evil side life and something I hope they are still teaching in highschool history classes. In 1976, I was a freshman in highschool and my history teacher made us re-enact the trial at Nuremberg. I was looking at world currency for sale online last night (another hobby...along with coins). I was trying to find "emergency money" printed in some cities during WWII. I was looking up various key cities in key countries. I was looking at cities in Poland and saw a tab giving current most prevelent religion in Poland. I guessed it was Catholicism. Well, of course I had to see if I was right, and got off track. I was right...85% of Polish citizens are catholic. Then I got more curious and wanted to read about the heavy Jewish influence during WWII. I got reading about Auschwitz and the many hundreds of thousands of people killed not only because they were Jewish but he also ordered the deaths of homosexuals. I found myself reading all about that very sad time in our history for nearly an hour (never found emergency money). That history class I took in 1976 was called "The World Today". I think now...30 years later, it is even more important to teach highschool students about that time and hopefully teach them the appreciation of the freedoms we have, and the dangers of a dictatorship (Saddam Hussein) , and most importantly, tolerance...of those who may be different than you. The color of our skin, the God we pray to, or not pray at all, the people we choose to love...we all love and are loved by others and we are all of just ONE race...the human race. We need to practice a little tolerance...not everyone should be expected to conform to someone else's idea of what is right. What a boring world this would be if we were all the same. The Holocaust was a massive example of trying to make a land of all "same" people by literally killing men, women and children and piling their bodies on top of each other in huge "ditches". And showing students pictures like this one and many very graphic others at poster size helps with "shock value." I'm sorry I am rambling. I guess seeing your picture again tonight and finally getting it's relevance and having just spent so much time reading about it last night. I can't believe that there are people who think that whole period in our history (The Holocaust) is just a big conspiracy and never happened. I'm a realist, and these kinds of acts of inhumanity breaks my heart.

I have posted other images from Auschwitz as well. As you, I find it very important to keep that time of history fresh in our minds.

Technically, I'm sure your settings are right. But that is so minor compared to what this picture is saying. Those suitcases are an indictment against all and any of us who ignore or hide the ugly truth of the Nazis. And to the idiots that run around today clamoring for "white power", maybe they will be the next victims of some other "superior race".

Technically, I'm sure your settings are right. But that is so minor compared to what this picture is saying. Those suitcases are an indictment against all and any of us who ignore or hide the ugly truth of the Nazis. And to the idiots that run around today clamoring for "white power", maybe they will be the next victims of some other "superior race".

very powerful image. my parents were from Holland and lived through the war as did so many of my relatives. The horror of what war can bring, the evil that ends love and life, is well depicted here. looking through the glass adds to the story as it seems when we look in the past, we are looking through glass. we are on one side, and they on the other.

A very well done photo. I liked the way the rear window does provide the purple tint, gives it a ghostly, dream like appearance. I would say that you certainly achieved your goal. Right now I'm wondering, just who is "Petr Eisler?"

Petr Eisler was a small jewish boy who died in the cas chamber in Auschwitz. Perhaps I have to make my notes clearer. Thank you for the review.
