I think the tight cropping works beautifully - the photo is about the boy's 'lost in thought', even slightly worried look. A wider context might have compromised that. Excellent shot.

I have seen this look. As an elementary dean in a poverty stricken area I see it alot. I like the use of black and white makes the picture more stark and realistic. After reading what you have written I am not sure he really feels the feeling of hunger. Unfortunately, I see the real thing.

I like this photo very much, and I do not think the tight crop takes anything away from it. In fact, I think it adds to the photo and really forces the viewer to focus on the boy's expression. Very cute picture. Thanks for sharing.

As far as I know, there is no law or rule against tight cropping or the close-up shot in general. Correct me if I'm wrong. The only question to my mind is whether the resulting image has any merit. You have captured an authentic expression in decent detail, even considering the limits of FAR resizing. It all depends on the framing. I like this candid portrait. Well done I say.
