I love these birds and, I LOVE that you captured him with all of his breeding feathers fluffed up. I think you managed what looks like low light really well. The soft green leaves behind him creates a really pretty background. Really nice work, Gracie!

a great close up capture of this great blue heron with such fluffy feathers; I try despratly to find the Reason why eating a big fish is responsible for fluffing his feathers; outstanding sharp details;

Grace,
A beautiful picture of this Great Blue Heron standing in the shadows under the trees over the shallows it's feathers all puffed up after having eaten a fish. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques & sharp focus.

I too love when a Great Blue ruffles his feathers :)
Love the glare in his eye, the fluff of his feathers, superb eye clarity and great colors on his ruffled feathers.

I do love the blues in unusual poses... great job capturing this pose!
Your colors are true and love all the textures to be seen in both the bird and the greens behind him.

A very nice nature shot posted here! Gets me wondering why it is called "great" and "blue"? Your fine classical composition allows us an enjoyable look at your heron. Exposure and sharpness are good. Nicely taken!

Lol, Their upper back, wings and tail feathers are a greyish blue color, and the Great part of their name is probably because they are North America's largest heron. They get up up to 4.5 feet tall with a 5 - 6 foot wingspan :)

Many thanks for your kind explanations!

Fantastic shot! The heron seems to be happy arter his dinner and got his feathers fluffed up like this. The notes tells me that you have been watching him hunting and eating and all that stuff. You have a lot of patience and passion for birds, my friend! And you take photography seriously. Not like those guys who think they are legend...being in need to be number one. Anyway, this photo is stunning and fantastic because of colors and tones, focus and composition. Bravo! (Wish I had more 6s left to award your work! (( )) ;-)

Hi Grace!
They're impressive and interesting birds,aren't they?
It must be some sort of a brain chemical release ( perhaps a 'Satisfaction response' ) that makes 'em puff up like this after a good meal!
(or maybe they're just cold! Lol! )
One way or another I think your photograph of this one looks Great! : )

Perfect timing to capture this fluff up! Beautiful feathers ! Well focused, the image is clear, exposure is well managed, colors and tones appear natural in this lighting , nice detail in feathers, face and bill, good eye contact. Well placed in the frame with plenty of room to move into. Well composed in this natural setting, well presented!
