I think it is the reflection you have captured so well doing this photo more than anything. The stop action is also very good, and you have brought out such a fine shine in the water.
The bird is standing out sharp and well defined against the background, and it is clear details to be seen. The exposure is perfect.
The tall format and cropping is working well, and I like the centered position of the bird. It is a lovely and well taken photo with an excellent DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

This would have been a great entry for the takeoffs/landing contest! A wonderful image of this Canada goose preparing to land, love that you got such a great reflection to go with it, even the tongue is visible in it. I saw this and it made me laugh because sometimes the landings can be awkward and funny. It reminds too of a Disney cartoon bird trying to make such a landing and of course it was hilarious. Definitely a great action shot, clear and vivid. The reflection on the water is perfectly artistic.

If you flip the photo 180 degrees and crop it close, the reflected bird appears to be in the sky, and the real bird appears to be the reflection.

One thing that stands out for me is the bird should have been sharper in focus,you can clearly see the wings are not sharp and thats a pity because this really would have been a super shot for this contest and even for the reflection one,can see this would have been difficult to get but still well done for this despite what i said...Brian
