Initial Impact: Good
Creativity of presentation: Good
Color harmony: Good
Center of interest: Good
Technical excellence: The image has good exposure. The white balance is good and the focus is good.
Technique: Traditional
Story telling ability: Good
Lighting: Avg. The blanket facing side of the image is a little dark. A speed flash set at 1/8 power with a light diffuser would help add just a little light to the area to brighten up the face and add detail with good shadowing. Be careful when editing eyes on a close up (especially dramatic ones like these) they draw the viewer down to them and any flaw becomes immediately noticeable. I marked a few spots that I've noticed.

To review this I have looked for:
Initial Impact.
Texture.
Lighting.
Technique.
Framing.
Light & Shading.
Story Telling.
Colours.
Difficulty of shot.
In my estimation, I believe this to be a 5 star rating. Great expression, I would of cropped a bit of the pink out.

Usually I don't review portraits, but I couldn't refrain myself to open this picture; he is absolutely adorable, you framed his face perfectly and the light is very good the face and the gorgeous eyes are really glowing - great capture.

OK, how can you go wrong with this one right. Look at those eyes! How beautiful is this child right. Nice composition. Now there are some technical things that could improve this shot. The color is looking a little too red. You could correct the balance by setting the gray area of the shirt just below the child's ear to neutral gray. The flash is too harsh in this too. You could bounce it off of a reflector to spread it out a bit and maybe soften things up some. You could also Set the flash to rear synch mode if you have it. It will send out an initial pulse of light to get the exposure going expose with the room light and then finally fire a final flash to fill-in. In my experience this creates more natural flattering light. You could also do some things to soften up/even out the skin tones in photoshop if you have it. I'm sure you love this picture though. This is an adorable child. If it makes you happy that's all that really matters right?

This was made 7 years ago. The camera was an olympus with a fixed lens. The only flash I had was what was on the camera. I understand what you was saying about the flash. I now have an olympus E3 with several lenses. I have a good flash system with it too. If I was taking it now it would have been the same pose but better lighting. This contest came up and I started looking through my files and found this one, thought it would work well. I appreciate your comments and I wish more people would be more constructive like you on the reviews. Thank you so much.
