It's a good capture with an eye glint but there are some weaknesses. First, DOF is unfortunately too narrow -- the beak is in focus but not the red breast. I don't know whether sharpening will help. Yes, I know you shot at f5.6 -- for 70-300 that's wide open.
Secondly, the black of the head is on the verge of being too black. You can see the texture of the feathers, but only barely. mostly where they meet the red and white.
Finally, the bird is looking right but you have just as much, possibly more, blank space on the left. So I think you need to crop about half the blank space on the left off.

You have obviously received a great number of excellent reviews of this with the All Time Best rating which makes it a little difficult to find the proper words to express how much I respect the creativity in this photograph. It is beyond me how you can capture these guys as all the time I try, I wind up with blurry birds. Great Job and I wish I could give you a 10.

How stunning and a wonderful sharp capture!! The seed in his mouth is a great touch and he seems rather relaxed with your taking his pic! Excellent natural colors and the framing brings him in nice and close! So cute. Best of luck in the contest!

Great shot.
Nice rich color with plenty of detail.
Focus is very sharp, DOF is perfect with the nice soft green BG. Cropping is excellent.

Fine capture. He looks like a stuffed toy, his head is so fluffy! Beautiful clarity- breast feathers so clearly defined as well as facial features. I love the cracked seed in the beak. It's amazing how they manage to do that so perfectly without hands. Good job on this- good luck in the contest.
