Fascinating composition in that you respected what nature provided, yet added your artistic flavor to enhance same. I'd say this is a joint venture (with nature) still life. It works on so many levels including shape, texture, colors, light and darks for depth and contrast. Nice eye...nice work!

Don't worry, nobody seems really to know what would constitute Still Life according to the reviews I got.
-
my wife says sometimes i get jobs done so slowly i could be a still life lol
-
He, he, I have to remember this one.

I don't know if it would be considered a still life or not, would be interested in knowing as well. I do like it though. Colors nice, full frame. I like how the light hits the paper. Well done.

Thank you very much. I let you know if I ever find out more about the Still Life issue.

it's surely a grand find and think you should have entered this one into the competition. i don't think anyone truly understands what still life is meant to be composed of, apart from the obvious fruit and flowers in a vase. a fab old style poster, that has to be a stylish, victorian gent. it works as a perfect foil for natures own shell carpet.

Thank you! Especially for understanding the picture. It has triggered controversy. Some find it to dark, others to light, some dislike the combination of objects or the location...well Somewhat the normal mix of like and dislike.
I guess you are right about what still life really meant. I was going to find out this time, I thought. Dumb me!!! Nobody really seems to know...well I put the other picture into the comp.

Nicely done photograph, I can't really make out what the meaning is behind this, but looks interesting anyway.

Thank you very much!
The meaning? Well, its a kind of still life with the contradiction of objects. It has to do with the messy way of mankind and the confrontation of man and nature.
Comment from donaldcolson
Looks like a still life to me. Why not? And it makes a very interesting photo. Perhaps a commentary on the messy ways of our species. Don

Great shot! It is amazing what we photographers find to compose a picture with. I love the torn New Yorker sticking out of the shells. A very unlikely combination. Very well done!

Thank you! That is exact what got my attention; the unlikely combination. I count myself very lucky finding piece of paper. It could not been torn more perfectly.

I'm really not sure since a still life is supposed to be arranged. I'm clueless...but I do think this is an excellent composition none the less. Love anything beachy. I breathe BEACH. The New Yorker is what gives this composition it's punch. LIKE!

Thank you very much! Nobody seems to know for sure. Arranged yes, but how much?
-
Ask the one who started the contest.
-
Good Idea, but the contest is organised by the site. It is a FAR contest with provided guidelines. Those guidelines say: "Still life gives the photographer the liberty to arrange the objects in the way he/she wants." Now how you read that? To have the liberty means to have the option, I think, not necessary you have to do it.
I found the shells and the other objects in a way I liked; but added the THE NEW YORKER I had found somewhere else....I that arranging?
Maybe I am just to much nit picking because I am not English spoken by birth.
I did not put that picture in the contest because of my doubts.
-
Well, then that's that. And I'm not sure either and English is my only language. LOL
