Beautiful rendering! Looks like she's wearing a gown of snow, living in her beautiful but gold kingdom. The red figure adds depth to the image. It might be somewhat distracting, but is a needed element. Wish you luck! -john

Thank you very much!!!
The red figure is Gerda. She is in full color, because she is the only one in this cold world of ice and snow, who has warm blood and is able to feel love.

Very well done. Great depiction of the snow queen and her realm. I like colors of Gerda, and the of Kay in b/w, because almost belongs to the snow world. Great job. Luck.

Thank you! You are an excellent observer. The colors are indeed symbolic. Gerda is in full color because she is the only on capable of feeling love and emotion, she dos not belong. Kay belongs almost as you observed.
Comment from Jean A Cormier
Very dramatic black and white piece which I initially thought was an oil painting! Although not familiar with the story, after reading the artist's notes, I can see the story unfold on the monitor. Good use of tonal range and the 'glitter' like effects are very good. I do like the little figure in the front and the little girl in the red as well-they are very well done. Lovely work in keeping with the contest theme! Great entry! Jean

Thank you very much! The girl is Gerda, she is ion full color because she is the only one feeling emotion, the only capable of feeling love. Kai is in black and white because he is claimed by the Snow Queen and belongs almost to this cold world of ice and snow at this point of the story.

Very different and cool. The snow queen is huge. I like the special effects around her. The two small children look great too, shows the queens size well. I like how most of this is in B&W. Good digital skills.
thanks, Natalie

Thank you very much for your throuought review. You are very observant. The black and white and the splash of color are symbolic. Gerda, the girl is in full color because she is the only one around with warm blood and a heard which can feel love, in this cold world of Ice and snow Kay has the splinter in his heart. It is frozen, hiss blood icy water. He has no color therefore.

Yes, I thought of the Snow Queen even before I read you artist notes. I really like the flow of the image and the use of the black and white, to create a nice drama. I am not sure that the image needs the red figure it seems to detract from the main composition, might have been better to reduce the brightness of the red, it is in conflict with the focal point. Other then that I like what you have created.

Thank you Lucien, A appreciate your review very much as always; but this time I disagree strongly. You are right, as a picture it dos not need the red figure. But this is not a stand alone picture, but part of a story, Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. The monochrome [black and white] and the colors are symbolic. The figure with blond hair and red coat is Gerda. She is in full color because she is the only one with warm blood and feeling emotion [love], in this cold world from ice and snow. [The symbolic color of blood and love is red].
Thank you again for your review.

anytime, i never said it shouldn't be there I just said it should be reduced in brightness, to bring a better balance to the composition. Sometimes subtle has more impact then in your face strength of a color.
hope you are having great day... Cheers!!!

Unfortunately lately subtitle seems not to work very well anymore in my experience. I will think about it. I gave it a brownish shade to avoid to bright color, but I am affraid Gerda will be overlooked. But she, Gerda is the main character, the true heroine, hidden in a very small human body.
But surely I will check different shades of red out. Oh I forgot to mention. [This is not made as a picture on a wall, but as a book illustration.]

I think as a book illustration it works very well.
have great day... cheers!!!

i still will think about the shades of color. Thank you :-)

Wow ! OMG ! This is just such a phenomenal piece. It was real creative that you applied many types of media to your artwork.

A very nice story about the story and the expansion in our times - great image and creation representing perfectly the fairy tale - handsome light application making the queen really shine out turning all the picture into the magic of the story - all the other details surrounding the queen are well placed and the composition is wonderful - you show the dark side and the light, the storm and the starry peace - all at once- the ice and the glory of love - great job

Very good illustration of the Snow Queen. I like the hint of red you left in the B&W conversion. Like all the movement in the painting.
Thanks for sharingl

Thank you very much for your kind review. This is not a conversion. It is a painting which was painted black and white and this splash of color. The monochrome and the color are symbolic. The girl is painted in full color, because she is the only one with warm blood and emotions in this cold world of snow and ice.

Thanks for the explanation. JB

Thank you! You made my day by understanding the picture. You are one of the few, who got the point and evidently even know the tale. You are absolute right, Gerda is painted in full color because she is the only one with warm blood and emotion in this cold world of ice and snow.
