Hi Envision, I've never had the experience of coming across hoarfrost, but you certainly captured it in all its beauty. The frost really stand out against the black background. Each projection looks like a tiny fern leaf. Love the focus which allows us to see that! Thanks for sharing this wonderful image! :o) helvi

What a great shot of this frosty cattail. I love the excellent crystalline structures that resemble tiny leaves. This is very well detailed throughtout the entire image and the dark background further accentuates and brings out the frost. A fabulous capture with great lighting and wonderful presentation.

Lovely image, Grace, showing the delicate hoarfrost clinging on to the dried leaves and stalks of the cattail plant against the dark background. Excellent lighting and focus showing a lovely crisp image. Very good composition. Suzanne

As far as why it's called hoar frost, I did some research and it's not as bad as what it sounds. =)
The term "hoar" goes back to Old English, the word "har" meaning "gray, venerable, old". In German, "Herr" refers to a title of respect. "Of frost, is expressing the resemblance of the white feathers of frost to an old man's beard".
Another word to add to OUR List! ;) Holy Frosty Cattails GG!!!
Well, GEM~MIB...this is an incredible capture of Hoarfrost on dried up cattail leaves.
Your focus, white balance control, crisp details, DOF and fine use of natural light are all superb. I like that I can see the old man's beard hanging off the Cattails.
Your camera settings are spot on Yipppeeee!
Incredible work behind your Lens G~Lu!!
=)

Thank you for the informative notes . We just call it frost. Now I know. The light is brilliant coming behind the crystals making them sparkle as they show off all of their details. Very nice composition

Will there come a time when plants in the Philippines would look like that too?!?
With climate change, who knows.
But while your freezing there, we're having global warming on this side of the Pacific!
Our plants are withering from the scorching heat of the hellish sun!
Effective use of subtle illumination popping out the chilly subject against the obscured backdrop.
Muted hues matched the mood of the moment...
Thanks for sharing...

This is the coldest April we have had here since 1936! We also had the hottest summer on record that year.....so who knows what's in store for the future! Thank you for your nice comments on my work :)

This is lovely. I had the opportunity to see hoarfrost on trees last January while visiting Denver. It creates a magical scene of unspeakable beauty. You have done an excellent job of capturing the fine details of these ice crystals.

Thank you! Magical is a great word for it. It truly makes the landscape so beautiful! I think it's a perfect definition for the term Winter Wonderland :)

A very nice shot. The hoarfrost is well exposed which results in very fine detail. A well composed shot with great colors that look particularly good against the dark background.
