Hi Pat.. I have never seen this species before, what a sight! Yeah, just like all others of the same feather - shy. You get at most 3 shots and their gone. But man, you nailed this one.
You captured the shot perfectly - love the frame.
Camera technique can't get better than this. The eye and head feather detail is so well detailed it is almost a 3D image.
The full background bokeh makes the bird and its perch pop off the frame.
This is nature photography at its best and I would judge a prime shot for pic of the month.

Nice soft background allows the Woodpecker to 'pop'. I have never hears of this type of Woodpecker and I think I can see his three toes!
