First of all, it bothers me that the curtain is in the way of the cross. Also the photo is not straight.
The colors are nice, but detail is lost.
The special feeling that i think should be present seems to be missing.

First i think it is a good photo. Only thing because of the top it seems it is slanted. Other than that i think the picture conveys your emotions well. I do get a sense of sadness when looking at this. I too am not religious but perhaps the colors of the wall and jesus in the center is what is conveying that feeling. If a picture can invoke emotion you did a great job which you did here.

Not being religious myself, I know that feeling...a little like visiting an alien culture and being uncertain how to behave. But it's not hard to see and feel that a lot of profound beliefs went into the building of this tableau. A really interesting photograph.
