I don't really know if it would win with that cleaner look. I think I like it better with these toys. Its more real; just like life. To clean photos look always unreal to me. The vignette gives a special look to these toys; as if the boy has taken them from reality into his dreams.

I think you are right about eliminating the toys, if you had it to shoot again, but they are a most a very minor distraction and of course at one level, they are entirely appropriate.
The slight softening works very well, it is a baby after all. As does the vignette and frame.
