That's such a beautiful painting of a rose, it's so realistic it looks like it's growing out from the paper and I could pick it. The black background really helps and love the leaves, very well done.

Beautiful Art Work Glena and a great contest entry. Lovely choice of colour for this beautiful full rose with the bright yellow and the green leaves are well created. Looks great against the black background! All the best!

Absolutely stunning Glena! Your rose is Lovely! The yellows shades are realistic as are the fine details yet this has a pleasing softness that is so appealing. The initial impact is well achieved as the color combination seems to scream off the page with excellent depth. Well done and best wishes for the contest with this beautiful work!

This is such a skillfully drawn flower. I like that the flower has a few brownish petals on the underside. When I first looked at the stem, I only picked up on the bright green color and not the shaded side of the stem; from that perspective, I felt like the stem was too thin to hold up such a large flower. But when I looked closely, I saw the shaded side of the stem. There is a sharp distinction between the light side of the stem and the shady side. Blurring the bright green line might give more roundness to the stem. Also, I noticed that the brilliant green stretches to the flower, but some cast shadows from the bloom would probably darken the top of the green line.

Hi Glena, Love the swirls of your rose. You definitely paid attention to the roses you used for reference. The rose ahs a beautiful shape to it and you did a really nice job of adding the shadows. Love the way you have light dancing off the leaves too. I like the way the light reflects off them. Very nice detail in the leaves too. Very Nicely Done My Friend! A great entry for the art flower contest! :o) Nancy

Thank you so much, artist friend Nancy, for reviewing descriptively and best wishes. I hope and pray I win soon. I didn't know how it would do in soft oil pastels although I've worked with oil pastels a little more than the regular. These soft oil sticks I used were mostly from Gallery, a few from Faber-Castell, and a couple from Sennelier's. I understand oil pastels do not emit carcinogens like regular soft ones do. You ever worked with soft oil or soft regular? What do you think, if so? Thanks.

I so wish I could help but "no" I've never worked with paints! I love your rose though! :o) Good Luck! :o)

Gosh that looks so real, I thought it was a photo!
You've painted this rose so well, particularly the petals, with all those highlights in all the right places. Interestingly the leaves and stem almost look like they've been done in a different medium, they're harsher somehow - but then I suppose they are with all their thorns! Lol
A very well drawn piece of work, very best of luck in the contest.

Thank you, artist friend Charlotte. I did both in Soft OIL pastels although only a few of the oil pastels were softer. I wished to give the leaves not as much a finished look. I put several layers on the petals. Have you ever worked in oil pastels? Oil pastels are supposed not to omit carcinogens as soft pastels can.

    You?re welcome.
I tried most mediums in my dim and distant youth at art school, but I never really got on with pastels as they always smudged too easily, I tended to go for watercolour or coloured pencils, though my true love was sculpture. But I haven?t done any artwork for a very long time, maybe pastels are better these days?

Thanks again. I taught myself pastels, more oil pastels. They don't smudge quite as easily, but all of them have to be sprayed to more easily work with.

Really pretty image. The yellow against the black really makes it stand out. My only suggestion may be that the leaves were a tad lighter in color but it's my preference. It doesn't mean it isn't a well-crafted image. Thanks for sharing!

Again, thank you for reviewing and for such kind remarks. It is done with oil pastels, supposed to be soft oil, rather than just soft pastels, and layers and layers on the petals. The oil pastels are supposed to not omit carcinogens as the soft pastels can.

A good looking image posted here into the competition! Your fine, full and appropriate composition offers us an enjoyable view of that beautiful yellow rose bloom. Colours, textures and tones are good. Well painted and good luck!
