I really enjoyed this photo because the bird has a disheveled look due to the changing of his feathers. He reminds me of me when I first get up, not quite put together. I think you captured a really good photo here. The bird is not "pretty", but I have never seen a teenage Cardinal before. That makes this a more unusual photo, showing nature at work, so to speak. Also, thank you for the photography tip. I am usually shooting cats, when I shoot animals. Usually I can not use flash. I did shoot a week old litter of kittens recently and they were in a closet. I didn't have my tripod with me and they were moving around too much, so I did use flash to get some photos. I don't know if I have anything worth submitting, but I'll make that determination later. I will file your information away for future reference.

So that is why he looks a bit scruffy.
But the orange is great on him. Thanks for telling how you made the background like this-will try and keep in mind.

Great colour and detail in this young bird. I am not sure if using the flash is the right way to go, as a jet black background looks unnatural.I am sure these birds are not nocturnal as it looks here. Mitch

Thank you so very much! No they are not nocternal and I agree it does not look natural but I think the shot is dramatic and it really makes the bird stand out! I take it the way it looks instead of the way it should be! I like experimenting with different things too! Who knows, I might find something else!

Sorry this should be a 6. Great job on the presentation and thanks for that useful information. The only problem is when I go to Yuma it is the city that has less cloudy days in the nation. I really like the color and the high contrast.

Thank you so very much! It will work late in the afternoon after the sun goes down, as long as you can see them!

Cool shot. It's funny that you liken him to a "teenager." I understand he's a juvenile, but he really does have the appearance of a teen. Good call!

Great balance here; you have some great contrast in the shot and a good balance of tones. Good spacial balance as well.

I am not fond of the fore-lighting. Looks like you used a flash, but there is no intense areas of light so you were far enough away to do so effectively. Still, the other problem with a flash is that they wash everything out, and that is the case here. No shadows. The cardinals feathers aren't casting shadows so they lose detail and the whole picture comes across just a little less dynamic because of the strong fore-lighting. I hate camera flash, I really do. I can see that this would have been an exquisite shot had the lighting been a little different. Oh well, what can you do?

You have a great eye and an obvious ability to capture the moment. That's the big thing in photography. Can't wait to see what you get next!

Thank you so very much! I have been having trouble getting the light right! The sun from the back side will cause it to be hard to show detail so I tried the flash! I learned this shooting humming birds. I thought it looked good! I know it is different and it really makes him pop!

This is a terrific close up shot. You appear ti have mastered such shots. The sharpness, colours, focus and the composition are beyond reproach. Well done!
