When I joined FAR site 5 months ago, you became my first fan because of a heron posting! Do you remember? I always thought you were a woman because one of my friends was Wilhemina and we always called her Willie...onwards with the critique.
Composition
Your bird photos always tend to knock my socks off. You seem to get it right each and every time. Here you have the walker walking and you gave this boy plenty of room to walk into.
Your cropping is thoughtful and well framed is your image.
See those pops of light in the upper right, they look like someone's verandah lights...I think if you cloned that out it would make for a stronger image.
I will not dock marks for that for as you know I am one reviewer on this site who refuses to dock for artistic prerogative (to a point) so here I honor your artistry.
TECHNIQUE
Always sharp as a tack, always spellbinding are your avian shots. I like your handling of the dof to show us his habitat, soft yet obvious...had you blurred the background to pieces it would have been almost too cliche...here you show the hand of a master when it comes to birds (and other images which I can't list here because there won't be enough room and FAR will take me before the firing squad and shoot me for babbling).
Your colours are true to life and so rich and luscious, the tonality is perfect, the contrast is fantabulous.
Willie, we learn so many good points about photographic art from your uploads, thank you so much.

Thank you so very much for your good and thoughtful reviews! The light you are referring to is the late afternoon sunset reflecting in water behind the trees. I had not thought of it being a distraction. Thanks for pointing it out to me!

He's a very interesting bird. Nice photo. My only critique is around depth of field. If you had blurred the background just a little, he'd "pop" just a little more.

I like how you have caught him in mid-walk - it is interesting to actually see his 'foot'.
Very good clarity, color and composition, with the feel of movement and direction well depicted. The natural lighting is working well for you here. Good detail showing all of his special markings and how his frayed-like feathers.
Thank you for sharing this bird on the move and a moment of your time at the lake!

As always you have captured on camera the graceful bird. This is a nice shot. You have timed it well. The light, colour and the composition have worked well. Good effort!
