Not the prettiest thing I have seen but it is a good macro shot. Your focus is right on the eye, as you said, and it is sharp. The use of light is good as well. The way you have positioned the face within the frame is good and the tight cropping works well. I think this was a very lucky shot. Nicely balanced and with good colors and details. Good luck with the contest.

My husband once helped a very old snapping turle cross the busy road by having him snap onto a stick and pulling him.
Snapped 3 sticks before he got one big enough! This is a good shot and good story.
Nice focus on the one eye, wish the other were a bit sharper. Good job capturing the textures.
