I do like this. It amazes me how those of you who sit and wait for birds in a blind get these marvelous shots. The action makes this photo. The colors of the wood, the bird and the background provide good contrast. Very nice photo.

Nice capture and good job of getting rid of distracting background. Nice and sharp on the head but with your big aperture wing tips are not so sharp but that goes with the territory when you are this close [either lens or distance]. I don't find the noise in this jpeg distracting but could be reduced with a noise filter which then would slightly reduce sharpness [there are ways around that too if you want to discuss it. Good going

thank you so much. What is a noise filter.
reply by Yukondick on 15-Nov-2010
Noise filters reduce digital noise. Imagenomic makes a great one that works either stand alone or in many softwares. I assume you used a high ISO for this shot and that produces digital noise.

I have it set on auto, someone else had told me to use iso 200. This is something I don't know much about but I am trying to learn. The filter you are talking about is an add on for ps. Or is it a filter that goes on the lens?
reply by Yukondick on 15-Nov-2010
You won't get much noise at ISO 200 and I certainly didn't see a lot in the jpeg you posted. The filter is a computer filter that I use as a plug in in photoshop.

I would rather set it on shutter priority when you are trying to catch motion. On auto, your camera picks a nice compromise. For landscapes, which I mostly do, I either work with manual or aperture priority thus I am able to control my depth of field.

I love the angel of the bird in this shot and the great clarity of the face. Pretty good for experimentation!

nice blurring on wings and head really well focused. i think your grainyness is down to automatic ios setting.

thank you so much. I've been reading about the iso settings. I don't think there is much I can do shooting at this speed. I'm going to try this again and maybe shoot at 1000/ or 750

Nice capture! Good job at catching the wings fully out nice. Great hue in back ground as well. The wings have a sheen and shine to them I like that. The lighting and colors are good . A slight blur but sure this is due to the action caught. Overall a good job, enjoyed. Can't help with the question you asked, but would suggest putting it in the "forum" and someone with the knowledge and skill will answer you. Thank you for sharing.

I would be pretty pleased to come away with that. His head looks pin sharp which makes the shot. What ISO/ASA did you shoot at? That could be the source off the grain. Thanks for sharing your work.

I have my iso set on automatic. I usually don't wory about that setting. What would you recomend?
reply by Glass i on 15-Nov-2010
Hi Willie, I would never set iso to auto. Generally I leave mine set to 200 and I manually increase it as required by the shooting situation at hand. Please feel free to send me a PM if you would like more info.

Composition
Focal point
Framing
Originality
All worth 4.5 stars.
