I appologise if this is unfair but this is what I think of the photograph.
I like your comment about the photograph, I understand and its a great insight, but for me this photograph does not show that insight powerfull enough, its out of focus, there is no center point, the boat does not work, the photograph just lacks abit of quality.
Taking this on a tripod(I know you said dont ask but its the main problem), using a high aperture and a normal shutter speed, perhaps find an angle were there would be a focus point, use a windier day to catch some dramatic waves, hope this helps, with focusing, more drama and a center point, i would of rated this a 5*, at the moment its 3 1/2*

You aren't unfair you are honest. I always will appreciate a honest critique very much even if it would be a one star and I disagree. There is a huge difference between being honest and being unfair. In my point of view it is inpossible for somebody being honest and unfair to the same time. That doesn't mean we have to agree.
"There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer." ~Ansel Adams
So I hope you want be mad at me if I disagree.
That photo is an experiment were I tried something new with what I want to share my experiences with the community and find out what people think about it. What I want is the discussion. And I got more of it than I was hoping for. Your input is very important in this discussion. Were I end up with the rating is minor to me what count is only the thoughts and comments. Truth the rating shows me something too.
The wave in my picture is about 4 feet. I have dramatic photos with much bigger waves. You will find it in my portfolio. That is not what I wanted. You see the wave that way, only the wave. I didn't wanted a wave I wanted the inside of it. I may didn't made myself clear. English is just my third language an I may use it wrong. I try to make myself understandable.
The ship isn't a point of interest it all. It is background as is the sky and the ocean. [That is the above of my picture]
The point of interest is the wave and the seaweed and the sand in it in the lower part of the picture about on the lowest rule of third line. It may should be on this line and I had a version cropped that way but it didn't seamed right to me.
I think that seaweeds are in focus swimming right above the sand. Of curse under water it looks different. If you follow the line were green and grey meet that is the line were the wave will brake in the next second. On the right side you will find some seaweeds shown below and above. This line by the way is the focal point. To find a focal point inside the wave is inpossible because it is unknown what is in there. I have to set the point and wait till the wave reach it. Every wave is different.
You are right it isn't powerful. If the wave would be powerful we wouldn't be able to see anything inside.
You talk about the tripod. Believe me it isn't possible. I t is incoming tide. The wave you see is still 3 feet high it will crash down the next moment and the tripod is under water. I was holding the camera about 1 foot high the wave crashing down will bring about 2 feet of water to the point were I am so I have to shoot and immediately hold the camera over my head. I had to invent a special cover to protect the camera.
I'm sorry if I took to much of your time. But since you spend a lot of yours and wrote this honest comment i need to be honest with you. I Had the impression the problem is not so much the photo itself but my concept what didn't reached you [my false of curse] I'm afraid you completely misunderstood my intentions.
Thanks again. ~Heidi

Nice image, almost looks like a watercolor painting. Very soothing image, yet at the same time suggest something wild lurking beneath the surface which creates an interesting sense of tension. Well done.

Short of the image being a bit on the low light side and I know from you notes why you did it, it has worked well for this. Nice technique captureing the waves just below the water line. Excellent composed image/

I like this photo and really like your explaination to the photo and why you took it and the difficulties that came with it. You have a nice horizon, and you have captured what you set out to get. The only thing is if there could have been a little more light, or even had your shutter set a little slower to let more in as it seems the sun has been clouded over or set at this point. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your generous review. I greatly appreciate your friendly comments. The light is about the best we got for several weeks now. You may heard about the horrible rain system in the western Caribbean. I was lucky that on this day the rain stopped for a short time and some sun rays broke partly through the clouds. I would not be able to show the wave on its braking point with slower shutter sped. Beside it I don't think that a shot of the inside of a wave would be possible at all since the water is usually sparkling and light is flashing back. Beside it I liked to show these somehow odd but natural colors and diffuse but natural light because it shows another image of the Caribbean as the cliche of turquoise sparkling water and ever shining sun.

What an interesting photo! I have to give you a lot of credit -- for the time it must have taken you to get this shot, you certainly have more patience than I do. Great composition!

Congratulations you have done a wonderful job and I can imagine just how long it took you to capture this one.
And yes I do often wonder what is just below the water line especially when swimming!!
I love your capture of the color of each differing section from the stormy looking clouds to the green breaking wave.
An excellent job.
Focus and clarity excellent.
Thank you for sharing.
Sue.
