Though not a football fan, this is artistically interesting. There is such good movement blending of the player and the flag. The picture is very well balanced. The touch of red under the football draws the black player into the flag. Very nice.

    Thank you very much!
Well me neither. I am no football fan. It was quite a challenge since I not only have a clue about the sport; but also never painted in poster art style before. :-)

yes a real surprise cleo 85! i'm just about in the dark about the sport as much a you. its funny that victorian life was identical in the states to the UK but instead of rugby and cricket, they ended up american football and baseball. i just don't understand these games or why they actually evolved (does not make sense). your picture does not really explain the above but it certainly has a great movement and action involved. the flag draped over the shadowy figure gives it the complete 'stars and stripes' indentity. your lack of knowledge in this case has given you a distinct advantage, by giving the viewer a completely fresh look.

Thank you very much. Funny indeed about those games. Even funnier when we acknowledge that while Football seems mostly US American all of Central and south America has the Soccer game adopted. Maybe the American Football comes from an early merge of Rugby and Soccer?
Painting that was quite an experience MK Flood talked me into it. Not only that I have not a clue about American Football; I have not done poster art ever before either.

it is one of life's little mysteries. i once saw a room in a museum of an american sitting room, in victorian times and packed full of items. out of 101 items the only difference was that a baseball bat replaced the cricket bat (how and why?)! that is very brave for you to tackle this subject. i know all about proper football (soccer) and my fave player right now is javier hernandez, from your mexico. he plays for manchester united who i support.

    Indeed, life's little mysteries.
So, you are a soccer fan and a fab of Hernandez. Maybe we need to put a contest on for the soccer fans.

maybe that has worked in your favour , so oyu havnt gone down the conventioal route of poster art , its brilliant Cleo :-)
reply by the author on 30-Nov-2012
Thank you. You may be right with that conventional route. I always try to avoid them anyway.
[We may need to put on another contest, for us from the soccer countries.]

Ok, you get a five fior effort, and for the fun of this! At first I thought he was naked, which made me laugh very hard! My wife says football is a lot of waiting around, short play time, big salaries, and a lot of stupidity..I have to admit I enjoy watching games! You have a great deal of moxie, to enter the contest, and a great deal of talent to come upwith such an engaging entry! Donkeyoatey

Well, maybe he is naked? Ha,ha! I was not sure how to clothe him and I also wanted the player as team-neutral as possible. I tried to get the spirit of the game which seems to have an somewhat patriotic effect to me. It seems the most typical US-American thing which seem affect everyone; no matter politics, class differences or skin colors.
It was quite a test to me; not only that I did not had a clue about the game, I have never done poster art before either.
Thank you a lot for your review and your exceptional encouragement :-) Cleo

Thank you very much. I am not sure if the picture is patriotic. I am not American. The game appears to me as if it is patriotic, the picture is just as the spirit of the game occurred to me.

You have produced some very interesting elements here and combined them to make a bold and graphic statement. The colors of the flag are bright as are the yellow stars. I found the football player a bit difficult to distinguish because of his somewhat unclear anatomy and how the
football itself related to the player. All in all a fine job.

Thank you very much for your kind review. I apologize again as I did in my comments. You are right with your critique. I have a problem with the player and the ball as well. Mostly because I have no idea how either should look. I do not know about American Football, never even saw a game; not even on TV. Just know that all Americans seem to love that game; and sometimes seem almost crazy about. So I did not go for realism but for a metaphor about the spirit of the game. I know the player looks odd. I made some scratches from the morning news and the Internet, but all those guys seem out of anatomy to me when they move in those outfits.

Nothing is more difficult to portray than the human form in or out of a uniform! Sometimes when I need a little help I'll go to www.clipart.com where you can get royalty free images as a guide. Just type your request in the box, (one word is best).
I'm certain this is not the only site but it has worked for me, Good luck.

Thank you for the tip; truth it would only be for reference. I cannot use clip art in a 2D painting according to the rules.
reply by Joanna P on 29-Nov-2012
Exactly, simply as a GUIDE to get an idea from.

Will check if the have those outfits. Its not the human form, its that strange uniform what distorts the human form, I have the trouble with.
