What an eye you have Grace...your ice covered leaf DOES look like a heart!
Very nice focus on it....the edging detail is particularly nice and the ice on the ground surrounding it is like a big beautiful white speckled mat.
I may have cropped this a little differently....a bit tighter but...lol...that ALWAYS seems to be one of my comments. It's a really pretty shot just the way you've shown it to us.

I think it could probably do without so much room at the top! I think I was trying to keep visible the very subtle heart shaped snow outline that radiates around the leaf. Still could have cut some room off the top, lol. Thank you for the nice review :)

When I first glanced at it I thought it was an acorn Grace...lol...opened it up and saw the heart shape. I was thinking a little square format but definitely not enough cropping to lose your little ice outline. My pleasure to review.

Oh my goodness - I just said the same thing to someone else! That it's starting to look like an acorn to me! I guess I'm going to have to start an "Acorns in Nature" series :)

ahahaha...great minds Grace!

I love looking at this Grace. It appears to be a cut glass heart that has been edged in copper..that has slightly tarnished. And my favorite part is looking through the ice and seeing the detail in the leaf! Wow! Excellent job with your camera and your focus!
The surrounding, frozen ground almost appears to be ancient and earthy, cemented ice that has fossilized this leaf and kept it in tact for centuries. I too am enjoying your wonderful find and how it inspires my scientific imagination!
Excellent light and shadows by the way!! I like the way the light is outlining the leaf.
Now that I am finished admiring your capture and your creative eye I am considering what I may have done in post processing. I may have tried to angle the point of the leaf to a corner in framing and cropped it tighter....keeping the stem. I may have tried B&W. And I may have tried zooming in more to see if I could pick up the detail through the ice. But all of that may have compromised your heart theme. So I love it just the way it is!! Thanks for sharing your creative vision.... lovely and interesting all in one!

What an awesome and thoughtful review. I really do appreciate that. I did think about B&W but it took away the copperish color of the leaf outline and I just couldn't part with that :) I agree that the cropping could have been more creative -so now I am going to have to hunt for another one to experiment with!
-
You are most welcome! And I certainly didn't mean to say any of my ideas would be more creative than this!!! This is awesome!!
-
No worries, I didn't take any of your comments that way at all. I appreciate your opinion and I think your ideas are inspiring. So don't hold back! :)

Hey, that is a good title for a contest and YOU can sponsor one, call it Hearts in Nature.
Envision, you do know that the title is part of the creative process and when you have gallery showings of your work it often will be the title that makes or breaks a sale. A title that further pulls us into the image and sets the mood.
I really like how you see the world around you and can imagine you looked down and KAPOW there was the photograph. Artistically it is beautifully rendered with sharpness and good marginal space all around giving us (and the leaf ) room to breathe.
why is this shot steely blue hue? Did you do that on purpose because normally snow is white. this might be good turned into a black and white shot as well.
Check your white balance calibration on your camera....you could expose this a bit more post processing to give it a brighter, snowier appearance.
BUT....perhaps this is what you were gunning for and I bow to your artistry.
Thank you for reminding us that a good photograph is everywhere...one just has to look!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review this in such a thoughtful manner. I appreciate that and your compliments are very flattering and encouraging - thank you for that too! I wasn't going for bright white, but I think that would be good for a B&W rendition. I didn't want to lose the copperish color leaf outline and I thought the steeliness emphasized the icy feel. I do like to play with white balance and sometimes I do move outside the box a little too far! Many thanks!

Wish you take some photos of some warm stuff, your freezing me out here. LOL. Good job minimalist photo. I like the way the leaf is outlined with snow melt (I guess it is) makes the leaf stand out more. Glad you used ambient light instead of flash. Might have blown it out. I'm going to put a coat on but mean while great job.

A frozen heart? How very sad! Cool picture though. Excellent focus and exposure. All the details are visible and in place. And you put your subject slightly off center to make a more interesting composition. Really nice work.
