This is a great photograph of the bull elk in the wild. His antlers are impressive, and his focus is definitely on you. You have captured a photograph of a beautiful animal in all his majesty.

You have pictured this Bull Elk so well, and I especially like that he was looking at you when the photo was taken. I also like the earth hues of the background, and how well the animal is standing out from it.

The photo is sharp showing clear and well defined details in every part of the elk, and the exposure is perfect. Really like the limited color pallet of this photo.

The format works well, and the animal has got a fine placement within the frame. This of course makes for a good and well balanced composition. I think this is a lovely and well taken photo Kathy.

Thank you Annie - I was pleasantly surprised to discover you are still on FAR; it looks like several folks from the past have dropped off. I so appreciate your kind and detailed reviews (always have), I try - but find myself going blank when trying to type reviews. You're not only an inspiration for your art, but also for your reviews. Thank You.

You are more than welcome Kathy, and thank you so much for the compliments. Yes, I am still around, but also I miss some of the former members.

Ideal shot for the wildlife contest,yo have taken a real good one of this elk with good dof in this,my only thought that its a tad central but takes nothing away from the overall image....Brian

I've reflected on your review and would benefit from any suggestions on how to place buddy differently in the frame. Since he is looking at the camera head on... maybe I should move his body right, so his face is perfectly centered? Thanks Brian - I do appreciate receiving suggestions.

yes right would be okay but now having looked at it think central was the right choice

Thank you very much for this generous 6-star review. I've primarily focused on outdoor photography for YEARS. I'm hoping to extend my bandwidth to indoor / flash photography if I can figure out the technology of it all. LOL

Kathy, It appears to be a twelve pointer and is a big buck. This is a beautiful shot of Buddy, majestic I would say. The autumn rut is on the way, things should get interesting. I hope you get to see Buddy again. Thank you for sharing. Ray

Yeah - Buddy was an awesome subject. He was initially stuck in the fenced area the rangers erect to protect the foliage. I have pics of him maneuvering that large rack through the gate to escape, a captivating moment. Thank you for your support and kind review.

What an absolutely beautiful piece of manual photography Kathy - stunning.

All the camera settings are top of the heap and spot on perfect. The focus is so sharp I can count his nose hairs.

The overall sepia tone has excellent contrast, tonality and tone.

The DOF is deep and highlights the background which provides a fine proportional scale - well done.

This post is one of the finest nature images I have seen in recent memory - Bravo.

Here's a six and show us more... Bob

Bob, this is probably one of the most mindful reviews I've received since returning to FAR after a 4 year hiatus. Thank You for your detailed review and I'm humbled with your sixth star. I look forward to sharing more over the coming year.

Such a splendid scene of this Bulk Elk gazing with all curiosity at you. I love the sepia colors maybe because of late Fall or a prelude to Winter setting. Clarity of beautiful textures of the prairie-like scene. All angles considered, this is technically strong. A joy to view.

You're welcome. Elk had been your favorite subject. I know it is yours.

Hmmm... I don't know that I have a favorite subject - that said, I do LOVE to just sit and watch the Majestic crowned (i.e. antlers) bulls during the rut. I've never thought about it; I would have to say foxes are probably my favorite. Unfortunately, I haven't had many visiting over the last few years. I purposely shoot hummingbirds and even bees to practice tracking my aerial subjects. I'll probably bore everyone to tears in the coming month, as the rut season will be in full swing. LOL
