Wow what an impact Cleo! The eyes are clearly your focal point and the rest just follows to visualize the cougar coming out of a mist of sorts. The softness just suits the artwork with as I said all the attention to the beautiful eyes! The b.g. colors almost feel like they are sheltering the cougar from being seen. Outstanding work, a perfect choice for the contest!

Thank you very much. You are the first one to realize that he is coming out of a mist. They are also called Gatos Spiritos, Ghost Cats, because the appear often like ghosts or shadows only for a moment. They are masters in mimicry and nocturnal for the most part. Thank you very much for your review.

Also one of the scariest cats on the planet and they will hunt man! We have them here though I have yet to spot one! On the other hand maybe just hearing about them is enough! Gorgeous creatures though and as you said like a ghost!

I know they are around as are Jaguar, Panther [Black Jaguar] Jaguarundi, Ocelot, Magay...all rare and in severe danger in our area. Ever once in a while we find the tracks. Our species are not quite the same as in North or South America. The biggest difference is that we seem to have the smallest versions. They seem also to avoid human. Amazingly in my 17 Years at the Yucatan I have never heard about a single incident involving a big wild cat; but I hear of incidents with a species called human all the time...I think the get more dangerous how closer human moves into their area.

Cleo you caught the sharpness on the eyes so perfectly and he feels like he is coming out straight at us.

You have cropped him tightly but unevenly. Why did you amputate part of him at the right side? However, that is your artistic decision, it's not for us to dock marks for that is my subjective opinion.

I rather like the softness of the all round feel to this, it's almost scary, like I really don't want to see the rest of him. You have caught that wild look so well in the eyes and it's perfect the way he is looking beyond, at something that he is about to jump up on. There is a nice story to your art.

Your tonal values are good. You have a good tonal range from very dark (er black) to almost white and plenty in between.

You have softened him as we look deeper, in photography we say depth of field and that is just fine, I like this style a lot.

Well done.

    Thank you very much!!!
I cut it this way for two reasons. Main reason is that it is the way the appear if you see them at all. They are also called Ghost Cats, Gato Spiritos because of the way they appear and hide. Sometimes you get a glimpse, halfway hidden before they kind of varnish.

Ah haaaa, I knew there was an artistic reason for this crop...and it just goes to show reviewers why marks should NOT be deducted for artistry, which includes cropping. Thank you for telling me that Cleo.

Very very nice painting. Its eyes are superb and make compelling viewing. The colours you have chosen are just right and the image really stands out and give an excellent point of interest. Very nice.

I like this lion so very much.
First of all, great drawing ability. Then, your digital treatment is very nice - really like the watercolor effect. Love the choice to blend the cat into the background and to blend the details of cat's body. And such a nice choice to keep that beautiful face clear and detailed. Really throws focus on the face, the expression, and those wonderful eyes!

Good job on Cleo, he looks a little soft and cuddly compared to the cats I have seen. Very interesting eyes almost like you have caught a softer side to the cat, maybe even a playful side. Good colors.

Thank you very much! I do not know where you have seen the cats and if they were living free or in a zoo. That makes a difference. The cats of Central America are for some reason smaller than the cats in the US and Canada and those of South America. They can be very fierce, but that is indeed just one side, if you are so lucky to see a mother playing with their young, than there you see all the softness of the world.

The wilderness of Canada and they scared the heck out of me though I have to say I admired them. Lynnette

Ah, the Canadians. I think the are quite bigger than ours, but I am not sure. Maybe I just think so, because our Jaguar is bigger then them. If you live long enough on the edge of a jungle you get used to all kinds of wildlife. I have not heard of a single incident involving wild animals including the big cats, crocodiles and snakes in 18 years, but I hear of several involving humans quite often.

Yes humans have a lot to answer for, happy painting. Lynnette

my dear I believe you than yourself with this 1. I simply love the softness but the intensity you have brought it with his eyes. the color palette is truly yours but I love the way it works with this beautiful cougar. you got everything in perfect balance from the slight wrinkle in the forehead to the length of the nose and details are so distinct but so soft set a great great job. I truly think it's awesome, good luck in the contest.

You didn't miss any I think. I am in a kind of emergency situation myself. Truth my husband is doing better, he is still in ICU.

This week I have to say the better art work is on the traditional side. i am tired of reviewing egrets and herons and ducks. You really have captured the look of this puma. It is one of my favorite big cats, they have such big sturdy bodies and move so elegantly. Love the detail of the face and the fadeout of the rest of the cat. Nice job.

Wonderful digital painting of this mountain lion. YOu have capture the concentration in his eyes so very well. Love the softness of the piece so in contrast with the power of this cat.

I like the fact that this is fused with the techniques that you used. HIs gaze is very well done as is the proportions. We used to know them as the Ghost Cats as the are so quiet and are seldom seen. I watched one stalk a man once while hunting, the man never saw him. NIce work.

Beautiful! Love the expression, the eyes. The colors are overwhelming - a good thing. And an excellent choice of a background color.
