I have often heard that saying, however I did not know its origination. Your photo shows just such a 'red sky' in the morning, which accounts for your fitting title of the sailors warning.
Very good colors and composition, with a great feel of movement in both the sky and the sea. Your inclusion of the sailboat adds to this scene and is also in line with your notes.

Cleo, this is a great shot, so well balanced with the light in the middle and the dark both above and below. The colors are not the typical "red sunset" colors, but shades of mauve, lemon yellow and copper mixed in with the palest green, giving this an "oil painting" appearance. The dark clouds on the horizon are so interesting as they simply sit on the horizon looking like trees or mountains in silhouetted background. All of this reflected on a restless water is really spellbinding. Great shot, and best of luck in the contest!
