What a wonderful close up of this beautiful bird. I like the way you caught him with his beak full of food. I like the way his eye looks in this with that spark of light in it. An excellent picture. Good luck in the contest.

Red is one of my favorite colors and it looks great on him. Good close up work. He's in sharp focus...I can even see individual hairs on him. Nice use of thirds and there's plenty of room to see the creamy bokeh.

Absolutely and utterly a winner! A 70-300mm lens blasts this image straight into our hearts. Can you tell a "gush button" has been pushed? (known as that OH WOW)
Compositionally what is wonderful about this image is not only the eye contact is there but this is NOT a documentary avian shot. By that I mean those images of birds just sitting there being birds (yawn) pretty but unexciting. Here you have a bird doing something that birds love to do...eat! And to add to the humour a messy eater to boot! What a lovely slob.
Technically this is a very strong image with exposure, sharpness, soft external flash with complete blur of background all adding to that touchable astounding close up feel.
I think that white pop of light in the pupil of the bird could come down a bit, don't you?
I'm also concerned about the close crop at the top because if you take this to the printer the machines may lop off his head ( I know from personal experience)..however, perhaps you are the printer!
I also am concerned that I lost the color red photography contest....hands down!

Thank you so very much! The light in his eye is from the flash. I guess it could be toned down a bit. I was using a soft box to cut down on the harshness of the flash. I always do my own printing up to 8.5 x 11. I rarely get any bigger but the photo lab I go to can adjust the print. Thanks again!

I like the seeds on his beak, and his color is so vivid. I didn't know they had a touch of gray in them. the light focused on his red makes it pop. thanks.

think i know who took this, good portrait of this cardinal, good use of crop in this,a bit darkish in this,as the front black colour almost blends in with the darkish background, but that saying a very nice shot...brian
