Very nice capture of this fellow. What size lens did you use to get this photo? I like the lighting here and the composition is fair. He was looking at you and might have even had a smile on his face.

PoohBear,
All I can say is I used a canon digital camera, which I'm still learning, set the ISO at 300, used the macro lens and portrait setting, F stop at 3.6 from what I can gather and then took the shot, and then several more of them with a different f stops, this one turned out best.
Thank you for the review, hope the info helps.

Thanks for the info. I am also a die hard Canon owner and am on my 10th Canon. Have fun!

These creatures always seem to be very inquisitive. Wonder what he is thinking. Love the different green contrasts. Focus great and lighting great. Thanks for sharing.

cmoisel,
thank you.
I have seen others do this where they have to keep their identity a secret so I leave you with this thought:

It fits beautifully well. The colours are natural and pleasing. The sharp image shows up the details of the mantis very well. All in all a nice nature composition.

Before I read your notes it was the tones of green that grabbed my attention. The break in the spiky background grass really shows off this ugly bugs head. Detail is good. Placement is great and the lighting very well done. Good luck in the contest.

This is really nice and certainly apt! What a lovely shot? Great colour, general view-ability and cropping. Cannot complain about the focusing either. A really pleasing picture to view. Thanks once again. Robin

You are right, plenty of shades of green here.
So good luck in the competition.
The focus on the main subject is a bit soft for me.
