A black cat

yes you have surely caught a wonderful expression of a feline quality. the way you have framed it, it could just as well be a black panther or a rare (dark) jaguar. certainly a different and unusual approach to standard pet photography and there is always something magical about a black cat.

Thank you! Rear as they are, we do have black jaguar [and other black/melanistic wildcats]. I never got a good photo of a wild one. I have seen them only in twilight, non since the hurricanes in 2005. They are shy to human. They are highly intelligent and learn from their mothers that humans are not food and are may dangerous. We have the smallest species her, they get bigger how farther south they live. That guy in the picture is a mostly a house cat; but has some blood of Magay [small Central American wildcat]. He seems to have inherited the melanistic gene from his Magay ancestors, which probably cause the unusual eye color as the black of his fur.

that is very interesting to hear. did you ever see the movie 'apocalypto'? there was a great scene of a black jaguar chasing a man. yes your cat does have that wild look to.
reply by the author on 20-Jul-2012
They borrowed that cat. He is an trained actor. Apocalypto a good movie, but not exellent. At least not for someone living here and know some of the reality of past times. A shame that a movie as this miss some of the historical research it should have or may someone missed info in purpose for the better show effect. Apocalypto is about as real to history as Dancing with the Wolfs.

mel gibson makes really good films but like the majority of all movies they are not history, just entertainment. i thought that chase sequence though was terrific and the jaguar should have won an oscar haha.

That's true. The Oscar for the Jaguar! The chase was terrific! LOL

I am going to go with jaguar, just because I want it to be one! Nicely framed close up, and a bit eerie as well! I like the way you would have the whiskers positioned in the bottom right corner of the frame. Donkeyoatey

Sorry. It is a house cat; but not an usual one. This beauty has [as most of our local cats] Some Magay blood. The Magay is a Central American wild cat. Some of the Magay carry a melanistic gene similar to the melanistic gene of our Black Jaguars. This gene cause the black of the fur and for all I know the unusual eye coloration.

Something like this. I have some of my shots of him in my Halloween folder for further mixed media use. He is perfect.]

From the selective image point of view it can be a jaguar as a cat. I just wonder why the eye does not have an iris. Have you edited the image? Any way what drew my attention first was the odd blank white eye of the cat against the dark background of its fur. Excellent contrast here. I love the array shades of gray and the outstanding details clarity of the image. You've made a very wise tight framing choice which forces the eyes of the viewer to stare back at the cat's eye. Wonderful capture and editing job.

Thank you very much. The eye is that odd from nature. He is a mix bread, mostly a house cat but with some blood of a Central American wild cat, called Magay. Some of the Magay carry a melanistic gene similar to the melanistic gene of the Black Jaguar. For all I know, the odd eye color of this cat is caused by the melanistic gene which also caused his black fur.

The face is wonderfully done. I like the textures and highlighting in it. The eye could have been done better. It is too stark. There are still textures in it that are missing from the eye.

Thank you very much for your kind review and input. I am not sure about the eye, but will look into it. This is a mix breed, a house cat with a bloodline of Magay, a Central American wildcat. The eyes are very different from the usual house cat, very light yellow without the ray like strips in the iris.

I think its a house cat, because of the shot nose. I'm guessing that a jaguar has a larger nose and mouth for taking down larger game then a mouse. You did a very good job of bringing in the eye, nice and clear and just the black line for the pupil. Plus I think the wickers of a jaguar are more course.

Thank you very much. You are right about the nose. It is a [small, ca.10-15 pound] house cat; but with a bloodline of Magay, a Central American wild cat. [The New World Jaguar varies in size getting bigger with more southern location. [Mexico 76-120 lb, Brazil 215-350 lb]. The jaws of an Jaguar are indeed very powerful, but variant in size as well]

this grabs your attention, there is something about cats eyes that are so mysterious and this little kitty looks like she means business. Reminds me of the cat I recently drew. The detailing on the fur has come through nicely but its the eye that really makes the piece.

Thank you very much. It is the unusual eye, what fascinated me. This kitty is mostly house cat, but has a bloodline of the Magay, a Central American wild cat.

It a house jaguar indeed, a mostly house cat with some blood of Magay, a Central American wild cat. He is the mighty ruler of neighbors house; about 10-15 pound.

oh wow yes a big boy mmm yes sounds similar size to Louis and yet ive never known such a gentle cat , so sweet natured

Excellent composition and lighting! Lighting allows for more depth when there could have been the risk of it being flat without the capture of it's coat's sheen! I am riveted to this cat's eye! Even though I think it is a house cat, if I stare long enough, I think I can see the "inner black panther" lurking within!

Haugar is perfect to, but he is a Maycat. It is a mix of mostly house cat and the Central American wildcat Magay.

This is a unique image of the cats eye. Wonderful detail of the beautiful black fur and closeup of the eye. The clarity is good and like the angle of the shot. Well Done.
