I must say I have enjoyed viewing this more than once. Your vantage point is has captured a scene that many of us will never see...except through one of your generously shared captures of your travels. And I thank you over and over for those.
This one is abstract in initial impact. Your choice of framing is quite effective I think for a viewer to stop and read what this may be.
I think it is amazing that the light allowed you to capture this coral reef so clearly. Is it typically that clear? It is quite scientific and would look excellent in my daughters science lab at her high school. In fact...many of your nature photos would.
Well done.. and congrats on the contest finish!

when the sky is blue, the water is blue: the deeper the sea, the darker the blue; the white ring or area is seen when there is sand or corals without vegetation;

Wow! This is a wonderful shot of the island. Nature is kind to them, but the inhabitants are just the opposite I think. Lots of problem in our neighborhood.. You have framed it well. The light and shadows, colours and the composition have worked out well. Good luck!

As soon as I saw some awesome shot I knew it was you Fred. And awesome is the word, a fantastic view (I'm glad you say from a plane, if you'd said helicopter I would be consumed with jealousy lol) from a great height of this staggeringly beautiful, naturally formed coral ring, a distinctly lighter blue colour to the rest of the dark blue ocean when seen from above with amazing long DOF, and really wonderful clarity that makes this a great contender for the competition. It makes me want to eat Calamari rings with lemon haha. The detail and structure of this wonder of nature is well defined and good detail suggests the deeper and more "populated" areas of the ring, next to no doubt an idyllic Island which shows signs of habitation and gives a good scale of the coral, but is dwarfed by the giant oval organism. Fantastic shot and best of luck in the polls! :)
