You did a wonderful job with this painting. All of the colors are blended together beautifully and you did a fantastic job on the details. Well done and thanks for sharing this talented composition with us. :)

I hope it's not the last painting you do of this spot, because it is a great spot for more paintings. You have done a wonderful job with the composition and placement of the ruins. The sky is bright and contrasts nicely with the foreground. Nice details throughout the painting. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for your five star vote and your comments Karen. So far I have done 14 different paintings of Chaco Canyon. I do not think I am done with it as the canyon continues to call to me. There is one very large Kiva on the west side of the canyon up on a hill that almost overlooks the entire canyon. When I figure out how to scale down, to maybe a five by seven foot canvas, the view from there to something that would look as expansive and thrilling as in person I will start it.

really beautiful and expressive work. stunning colour, especially in the sky; which is a very strong feature. loving the cloud swirls and the structured but sacred rubble.

This is a beautiful painting of the landscape. My wish is to travel to see these magificent places. The blue skies are awesome, and I love the detail in the rock wall.

impressive work with the palette knife, in fact one of my favourite tools to use with oils and one which can either go the right way or can be a complete disaster .I have discarded many a painting following use of the palette knife but then again have been very happy with the outcome of a few too..you should be very pleased with your result here as it has worked well and your use of such impressive ,well done , a worthy five from me

The first thing I notice as a viewer of this work is the interesting structure of the cloudy blue sky and the "cracked" lines that run through it, creating an interesting and eye catching effect. The clouds get thicker and more defined before they reach the top of the small hill, showing the soil where it has leveled off and yellow and green grass in patches as it does throughout the piece, that sits behind the truly ruined, perhaps over (and certainly roughly) 1000 year old building of many in the area, that sacred is certainly an accurate and fair description of. It is amazing but also a little sad to see them in such a state of ruin, but in the same breath so well preserved and telling us a lot about their culture and building abilities (I did my homework on this one today!). Brilliantly accurate and carefully painted, well proportioned and detailed views of the brick structures that once made up a few great civilisations that lived here in the canyon in its heyday, with good contrasting golden brown colours of varying shades left in the remains of the stones that once built them, and still signs in the darker inner structure of the style of building used as well. Set and captured nicely in this idyllic setting, the sun beating down and revealing all that is left, I reckon it would have been pretty good times living here at its peak. A wonderful piece, with great detail and proportion and colour palette - excellent work and choice, well done :)

I really enjoyed your notes, because I have never heard about this place before. I can imagine that it was very special to walk alone on a site like this, and know what you mean. I have had the same feeling myself when walking amongst old ruins in Greece.

You have also pictured this place so well, and I especially like the fine textures you have brought out in the sky. I also like the way you have used high lights and shadows to bring life to the scene.

The format and the framing of the painting works well and I think it is a very good balance in the composition. A truly lovely and well done work of art Carl.

Thank you for your five star vote Annie. But more importantly, thank you for sharing that you know the feeling of walking among the ancient ones and the elements of composition you have identified.

Nice entry for the contest - good luck. Love your choice of colors; and how the ruins stand out against the blue of the sky. You have a wonderful technique. And I see that you are relatively new to the site - so welcome aboard. Thanks for sharing.
