Very nice flower shot. Good color and detail. I like the echo flower in the background. The focus seems strong and the soft gray back ground is a good contrast for the flowers. Good luck in the contest.

A very nice perspective that shows off the stamens particularly well. I like the tight cropping and the beautiful colors. Best of luck in the contest.

Kudos for not messing around with the natural order of things.

Great initial visual impact.

The incomplete image of the tiger dominates the frame. Perhaps this is cropped a little to closely.

The colors and tonal range are bright, clear and vibrant. A lot of eye candy with this flower.

A nice even light gets the most out of this tiger.

Macro Photography is a world unto itself. Macro requires lens are specifically designed for this art. Good Macro lens are fixed focal length - 50, 90 &100 mm are common. When looking for a Macro lens look for ones that are 1:1 ratio.

Macros of large blossoms that have the entire blossom in sharp focus are hard to come by. The overall image I see in this Macro is soft overall.

If you are really interested in getting good Macros here are some hints.

ISO - No more than 400 and 50 is best. Look at the edges of the dark spots on the petals. The edges are not clear and distinct as they should be. The ISO of 1000 has an unacceptably high noise foot print and that reduces image sharpness.

APERTURE - For tiny parts 'Open Up', for big parts "Stop Down'. The DOF at f/5.6 is way to shallow. Stop down to f/ => 12.

MISC - A tripod is a must. A remote shutter release helps greatly or learn to use mirror lock up with the timer this tactic will help reduce motion blur.

Good luck in the contest ... B-)) Bob

Thanks for all your advise Bob. Much appeciated. So in this phot do you believe I should lessen the crop. This was my ordinal intention as this too is fully unedited except for the cropping. I did buy a macro lens but did not have it at the time of this photo. I bought a sigma 18-250mm 1:3.5-6.3 macro hsm. I take it from your comments I need to look into the 1:1 ratio.

RE cropping you should have all of the blossom in the frame. Also, a larger border around the blossom gets better perspective, also broadens the focal plane so more is in focus.

RE lens. Tele-zoom Macro lens may start out at 1:3, as you rack out the lens the ratio changes, 1:5, 1:10 etc. The greater the ratio the greater the size distortion is. A 1:1 means that at the advertised focal length of the lens whatever you focus on will captured in its actual size with no distortion - everything is very sharp.

With the lens you have the greatest single improvement you can make is get you ISO down. Yes you will sacrifice shutter speed but there are ways to compensate ... B-))

Not sure that I have seen one of these beauties before. Looks like a grand entry for the competition! Your full and central composition offers a very enjoyable look at your lovely bloom. Exposure and sharpness are good. Well done and good luck!

A wonderful capture taken from a great point of view and in brilliant lighting, showing the furled head of one of these tiger lilies fantastically and with great clarity, showing the spotted black pattern on the orange/red flower superbly with the stamen protruding out in all directions, looking like some creature from the deep or outer space! Short DOF shows another or secondary part to the flower blurred behind, which gives better focus on the prime subject. Great piece and a good entry for the competition, best of luck at the polls! :)

Thank you so much. I was actually going to call this ?the alien?. Another thought was ?the creature?. Thank you so much for your awesome review.

This is so pretty! I love the shape of the petals , the stamens pointing downward, the vivid orange color with the dark spots. This is well photographed with good focus, your composition shows how this flower grows, well exposed , shows natural colors and tones! I love it!
