I really like the outcome of your background technique. The chosen colors are appealing.
I have never taken an art class and go about creating intuitively with pretty good results. Your explanation of use of usual grids or guide lines had me intrigued. :)
The hand reaching out is extraordinarily executed. I am impressed! I still struggle with hands. You must have a lot of experience.
Glad to find you here. I think I can learn and be inspired by you.

Thank you. Type in 'artist grid method for painting' in any search bar. I copied this, "In a nutshell, the grid method involves drawing a grid over your reference photo, and then drawing a grid of equal ratio on your work surface (paper, canvas, wood panel, etc.). Then you draw the image on your canvas, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred." Many artists of the reissuance period would place a wooden grid frame in front of the subject and do the painting. It increased the accuracy and speed of the painting. From time to time I fine the method to confining and must bust out of it and even break away from doing a drawing first to do the paint within the lines technique. This is one of those paintings. It felt good to just paint the background and then the subject. To do it, you must slip totally into the "zone" where time doesn't even exist. Hope this information helps you.

very well painted hand, seemingly simple till you try it. As always with your work, carefully planned action.. Asking for money, asking for help, the hand of reason. Here's a thought from an unknown poet:
There's never a trouble that comes to stay;
There's never a grievance but fades away;
Forget the heart-ache and bravely lend
A helping hand to some sadder friend.

Thank you for your five star vote and comments. You express an interesting point of view. I never saw this painting as a hand asking for anything. It was painted with offering help as the purpose.

I am from the Catholic System, which means: never mind if you can cope, you are Catholic so just bear up and get on with it, give for the rest of the world...sorry, but that is how many people see it.

This is a great composition of the Helping Hand.
I love the free flow of your drawing. I think many of us can relate to having a block or over-thinking our creativity. I can relate. Sometimes, as you show here, it's just better to focus on doing our passion without any guidelines. This allows us to experiment and find new ways of doing art.
I like your approach to the old word feeling in your background colors. They are well blended. And the attention to details of the hand is wonderful.
Good angle, curving of the fingers, the fingernails
and the structure of the hand. Great tone throughout.
Nice the way you show a small part of the shirt above the wrist. It has an overall calm energy to it. Very pleasing art to view.
Good luck in the contest.

You did a great job on the background. I love it. That would be difficult to paint your hand while not being able to use it as well as keeping it still. Great job

Hum, maybe my comments on this work were misleading. Sorry about that. I held my hand in various positions in front of a mirror and photographed the images in the mirror. I then worked from the photograph that I selected that gave the message I wanted to say. The painting of the hand was direct upon the background done without any visual aids such as grid lines or the hand projected upon the canvas. Than

Nice drawing of the hand as though it was for me for Him to take my hand and show me the way to a bigger and better way of life.
I love what you created

You definitely got over your painter's block. This reminds me of the hand of God reaching out to help His children. I love the background colors and the way you started at the top with the lighter color turning into the darker color. The hand is very realistic. Excellent work.

Thank you very much for your six star vote and you comments. I appreciate both. However, while I appreciate your remembrance comment, I must demur as I am only a painter creating objects of beauty.
