These birds seem scrawny when they are standing still, especially with their long stick legs. We rarely get to see them in flight like this. The wings are beautiful and magestic. So much bigger than they look tucked in. Thanks for sharing, beautiful capture

To look at the wing span from this angle is just amazing, and your stop action is perfect. Even the small drops of water from the bird's feet are showing well. The light is falling on the bird in such a lovely way, and it is standing out from the background in an excellent way.
The photo is sharp and it is indeed clear and well defined details to be seen in the feathers of wings. The exposure is perfect.
I also like the format you have cropped the photo into and the placement of the bird within the frame. I think this is a truly lovely and well taken photo Fred, and with an excellent DOF.

Look at this majestic big blue bird - wings fully extended, flight feathers rippling in turbulence generated by full flaps! What a view! I have shot a lot of Heron pics and I've seen a lot more but I have never seen this particular aspect of the big blue - wonderful timing.
I agree with your assessment of the focal quality of the head, so what. The head is not the center of interest.
The resulting image from your timely exposure and superb camera angle has given us a capture that is fun to view. Given that magnificent wing span and great mass of the body one has to wonder, "How can it possibly land safely on those spindly legs?"

it is a cool action capture. i like the birds wing spread form in this capture. the clarity is great. the angle of the shot of this wide wing spread bird over the water is great. the capture of the light is great. the image is balanced and eye appealing to the viewer. good eye and great job overall.
