These birds really look strange posing like this, and perhaps it is to get rid of some heat from the body. The light is falling so lovely on this Heron, and it is standing out from the blue sky in an excellent way.
The photo is sharp and it is clear and well defined details to be seen in the feathers of the bird. The exposure is perfect.
I also like the format you have cropped the photo into, and also the placement of the bird off to the left. I think this is a great looking and well taken photo Fred, and with an excellent DOF.

I have reviewed many photos of this one or another heron before. I have never seen a heron perched like this. You have a gift to sit, watch and photograph wild life. Excellent.

Perfect details, nice colors on the feathers and beak, good eye contact and so nicely presented against the darker blue background.

A beautiful picture of this "One legged" Grey heron perched high on a three in your park it's wings held down & out so the sun can warm up it's breast & the hidden leg & foot, while highlighting it's beak head & catching the sparkle in it's golden eye. The clear blue sky creating a perfect backdrop. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques& sharp focus.
