From an artist point of view you have done an excellent job. The colors are bright and airy. The star is in perfect focus and the flowers are in a desirable placement. The back ground is faded nicely as not to distract. You have kept it simple and I think that is better. Very nicely presented. Ray

You did just fine all by yourself. The reddish and greenish-mixed backgrounds are lovely. The lovely hummingbird stands out nicely even though it blends somewhat with the nice background. The stems and flowers/pods are nice. Best wishes in the contest. A job well done with your procedure.

Your close-up capture is intriguing. Your photo has good depth and is excellent focused, exposed and treated with mixed media. How the light amplifies the bird and changes from dark at left into sunlight at the right is appealing. The mixed media is well composed and framed. The Hummingbird has a good place within the frame. The composition is balanced.

It doesn't look like you need very much advice about how to do layering because you have done a good job. The only mistake I can see is that since a hummingbird is small, the flowers should have been much bigger. That is if you intended them to feed the bird. If not you could pretend that the flowers are sitting in the background, but then they should be more faded.
I do however like a lot all the rusty and golden colors, and also how lovely the light is falling on the hummingbird. It is also standing out from the background in an excellent way.
Your focus on the bird is spot on and sharp, and it is such clear details to be seen. The exposure is perfect.
The format and framing is very good, and the bird has got a fine placement off to the left. I think this is a truly lovely and well taken photo with an excellent DOF, and I wish you luck with the contest.

I used a red and gold poster board for the background and layered the hummingbird plus flowers on it.
