This was the topic of my first winning photo in 4H in the 5th grade. I used a little black Brownie Hawkeye box camera. The full-frontal pose with great lighting gives us a great look at his handsome features. The darkened edges are used most effectively.

Horses are clearly the most fascinating versatile handsome animals to paint or photograph. It is difficult to go wrong with one as a subject. Coupled with that fact and this horse decked out in a black and white setting is a spot on combination.

Your capture of the horse with the white in his forehead and gray scale, black areas is skilled; the whole scene with those black ears, nostrils, eyes is nice as is the complementary background. Very nice photography that would also be a nice drawing/painting. Thanks for sharing, whether in or out of a contest.

An excellent looking nature image posted here! Your fine and appropriate composition offers us an enjoyable view of that handsome horse. Pity you did not enter the competition, as I believe it would have done very well!

I have found that horses are never "just a horse." They all have personalities. When I worked on a 250-acre cattle ranch during college, we rode the fence line once a month to check the barbed wire for breaks, doing needed repairs. The owner had two horses, but only one would allow me to ride it. The other would step on my foot if I tried to get close. One time I got past the stepping, and she reached back and bit me. I decided she was a one-person horse, and I wasn't the person. :-)

I'd have definitely voted for it. What an awesome shot. The details couldn't be better. The circular light in the background makes this beautiful horse pop.

I am sorry you missed the black and white contest. This would have been a great entry. You have captured the essence of a beautiful soul. Nice balance. Good contrast. A pleasure to view.
