This is such a beautiful moment to capture. It's amazing how big those antlers get. I can't image how strong his neck must have to be to carry those giant things around all day and night. You can see that he is getting tired of carrying them. If they are on a farm, why can't they trim the antlers down a bit so they wouldn't be so heavy? I digress, the photo is well presented, great focus, lighting etc, etc. And BTW, thanks for the information shared in regards to the poor elk's future, now I just want to cry in my ice cream while picturing the elk dying alone. Thanks Bob...wink wink! LOL!

My bad, again Lisa. This might help. The bull will shed the antlers after the rut. From late fall to early spring they are antlerless.
Thank you so very much for the in depth review and rating. I am glad you liked the post ... Bob

What a beautiful photograph Bob! And the story behind it. I did not know that this is the way their life goes for the bulls.
That you for sharing this spectacular image! I wish I still had six stars!

What a fantastic photo of this magnificent bull elk surrounded by the herd, hopefully I'll have an opportunity to photograph some elk!An excellent composition showing this guy standing watch, waiting for the next challenge to his dominance. He looks a bit weary, and I think the dark, overcast sky echos that feeling. A beautiful image!

This is a wonderful capture and story. This old fella might be ready for retirement, that rack looks too heavy to be carrying around but he looks contented with his harem.
The composition is great and the image is sharp. Colors are true, the darkening sky adds a nice touch.

What a wonderful photograph. Such a majestic fellow he is. And such a beautiful family. I've always said, the best way to shoot animals is with a very good camera.

A magnificent scene. Love low lighting that makes this scene more dramatic and also peaceful. The visual arrangement fits well, focusing on the one with the biggest antlers. Well captured.

It must be exhausting to care for all of these females. Your composition shades and tones are well done. That sky is beautiful and highlights your subjects perfectly. Thanks for sharing

Bob,
A beautiful picture of the old dominant bull Elk surrounded by his "Wives" & calves with a distant young bull seen on the horizon. The sunshine highlighting his anthers. Beautiful composition, framing & lighting taken with superb camera techniques& sharp focus.

Oh my goodness, your interesting notes made me feel so sad. The circle of life I suppose. He's still such a majestic beast that you captured beautifully here. All techs look spot on. A great shot.
