My love of birds aside, this is a stunning photo Pat, the detail is astounding - I know I've already said, but for the rest of us photos of (almost) all-black birds are really hard to do well, and yet you appear to do it with ease!
The focus and dof are spot on, the exposure is perfect and the composition, using the rule of thirds is impeccable.

A well timed capture of the bird mid-preen. Great composition and really good clarity. The black feathers are standing out nicely against that golden background of foliage. A lovely wildlife shot!

The vivid background colors are so nice, expressing autumn. The large bird does seem to be preening its wings and/or feathers. The small limbs are clearly seen. Thanks for sharing.

This is a truly pretty bird, and it is so sweet the way it is preening its feathers. I think especially the eye is well captured showing the fine high light, and I also like the autumn colors of the background. The bird is standing out from it in an excellent way.
The photo is very sharp, and it is indeed clear and well defined details to be seen in the feathers of the bird. The exposure is perfect.
I also like the way you have cropped the photo, and also the placement of the bird off to the left. This of course makes for a good and well balanced composition. A truly lovely and well taken photo Pat, and with an excellent DOF.
