This is excellent work Ray. My uncle was an artist and he did a self portrait using a mirror also.

This reminds me of him. The facial details and colors are very much like his self portrait.

A really nice work of art here Ray ~ Steve

OMG Ray, I never thought of you looking like that, I'd always imagined you like the portrait on your profile, with a long beard and a Van Gogh style hat!
I missed this post in Nov and just wanted to let you know that I think it's an awesome painting!

Charlotte, thank you for your complements. This painting was done 24 years ago, I did have a beard on and off for about 24 years but now I just sport a mustache. I am so glad you enjoy the painting, thank you for your fine review. Ray

You?re very welcome Ray, I wish more people would do real life paintings rather than from photos, it does make such a difference to the finished piece.

Charlotte, painting from life is difficult especially, taking measurements using a stick. Everything comes out opposite. It certainly was a challenge. Thank you for going over that. Ray

Yeah, but look at the results! Well worth the effort!

Yes it is, Charlotte, I agree. Ray

This is drawn with incredible skill Ray. I think that self portraits must be extremely difficult to do, particularly from a mirror and not a photograph. Really good features. You look to me as if you are someone in authority here, maybe in the police force? Or maybe it's just the stern expression. I am a sucker for a beard though and note that you've grown one since! Very clever work that deserves top marks.

Christine, you are very observant, I am a retired lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, the stern expression came from not being able to smile the same way, long enough to do the mouth.Thank you so much for your wonderful review and rating, I am so happy that you enjoy it. Happy Thanksgiving. Ray

Oh what a fabulous career Ray and I bet it was an interesting one too, with many stories both good and bad to be recounted.

Hi Ray, It must be strange doing a self portrait of yourself. You certainly did a good job with skin tones and proportions of nose eyes and ears. You look very serious in the image. I'd say you were really concentrating on capturing yourself. I think you did a great job. A self portrait had got to be difficult to do. Very Nicely done My Friend!

Nancy, It was a time when I doing portraits and I wanted to try one of myself. You are right when you say it takes concentration and this is what evolved. I was so locked in, I didn't think to smile. I enjoyed doing this one, it was a challenge. I am so glad you enjoy this one. Thank you for your wonderful review, rating and all those compliments. Ray

Reckon you liked your self portrait at the time, but later for some reason you grew that beard. I wonder why? Colours, textures and tones are good. Nicely painted!

A fine self-portrait painting, done using a mirror, as you say. It looks like the canvas mirrors the soul of a man.:) A fine rendering. But it's quite different from what is shown on your intro page. Thanks for sharing!

'Good Show',Ray!
Thar's a fine looking self portrait painting and you remind me of Captain Picard from the 'Next Generation' and it's various spin-off series!
Excellent,man!

How cool is this!? It is always a pleasure to see the likes of someone you have only engaged with as an icon in your minds eye. You did a nice job. Now let us see a self portrait with your camera so we can compare.
Funny I have been considering doing a self portrait lately but not sure I could do a good rendering. My husband says all my girl art looks like me. Lol it doesn't!
But I might try an illustration style.
Thank you for sharing, Handsome.
