This is very dramatic in b&w, and would have been a great entry for that contest, too! You've captured a lot of great details in both the clouds as well as the water, and what looks like sediment trails leading back into the ocean from each bird draws the eye farther into your photo. My only suggestion would be to edit it and adjust your brightness in order to brighten up the entire image which will make it easier to see the shorebirds and detailing throughout.
